Alanya Citadel

- Alanya citadel and places to visit inside it:

Citadel of Alanya is constructed on a steep hill having a height of 300 m. Except the northern edge, all other edges of the hill reach the sea with a slope which is almost impossible to climb.
Especially, a stone thrown towards the sea even with the maximum possible force can not reach the sea at a point on the northwestern walls of the citadel, which is named by the local people as The place for throwing the man, it is claimed that the criminals were thrown from here to the sea.
By an optical illusion as if something on the rocks attracts, it follows an inclined path and falls down on the shore line below looking very thin.
As compared to the other sections the northern slopes of the hill have an inclination more suitable for constructing an at least curved road. The main gates of the citadel is reached by a highway. The city of Alanya surrounded by the city walls in the old times or Citadel is divided in to 5 sections: Ehmedek citadel, inner citadel, city center, central citadel and outer citadel.

Main gate:
Main gate has a plan which enables those who want to enter the citadel to walk between the protecting walls in a way to form 2 successive right angels.

Arap Evliyasi and Hellenistic city walls:
The highway climbs the hill towards the south inside the outer citadel by advancing 500 m. which is entered by passing through the main gate.
Then it enters the central citadel. It is possible to see the remains of the Hellenisticwalls on the walls of the central citadel which are comprised of 8-10 rows of stone from the bottom at this point of entry. The wall was elevated by making additions to these rows of stone during the later periods.
Again, a Byzantine chapel located at the point of entry on this wall was built on a tower. Among the local people this chapel is called as Arap Evliyasi ( Arabic Saint ).

Ehmedek Citadel:
Ehmedek Citadel is located at a point on the northward end of the walls surrounding the central citadel. This point overlooking the main gate and the modern city, has an extraordinarily beautiful view which is located at a lower altitude.
It is like a 2nd inner citadel of Alanya Citadel. This citadelís entry is gained through a gate which like the main gate requires turns with right angels. There are cisterns, old military buildings and the baths located inside Ehmedek citadel.

Citadel Mosque ( Suleymaniye Mosque ):
Citadel mosque is located on the city center section of the citadel. Citadel mosque was first constructed by Alaeddin Keykubat at 1231.When it was rebuilt in 16th century by Ottoman Sultan Suleyman the Magnificent, when the mosque was demolished.
Its entrance has a portico ( revak ) and it has square plan. Also it has one minaret with single balcony ( serefe ). At a corner a cistern was added.

Bedesten ( covered bazaar building ) and Caravansarai:
Bedesten is located to the south of the mosque reveals the fact that Alanya was a prominent trading centre in middle and also new ages. Near the shopping centre the presence of a caravanserai evidences the same.
This caravanserai is made up of a courtyard in its center and the covered places surrounding this courtyard and having an irregular rectangular plan is was built to provide for the accommodation of the merchants and their animals coming to Alanya.
Today this caravanserai which is restored is used as a hotel.
The staples have 5 naves built as appended to the western edge of the caravanserai . It is easly understood that at 14th century it was constructed during the period of Karaman Beylicate.
