Alara Inn & Citadel

Alara Inn and Alara Citadel
It is reached by following a 9 km long road which separates at the 29. km of Alanya Manavgat highway. Lara Inn was built on the shore of Alara stream. Passing Through Alara streams valley this road was the caravan road which connected Konya to Alanya and Antalya in ancient times. This road not only connected Mediterranean to Black Sea it also provided the connection of Anatolia to Mediterranean. The road was guarded by the Alara Citadel which can be easily seen from the place where Alara inn is located and which is built on a point overlooking the valley. First founders of this citadel are not known.
Seljuk Sultan Alaiddin Keykubat I. Took the citadel in 1230 by way of peace from the brother of Armenian ruler Kyr Vard, whose mane was also mentioned in the section titled history of Alanya before. In the same way he had taken Alanya.
During the dominance of Turks the name of citadel was not changed, but in the structure works of repair and extension were performed. The citadel structure may be examined in 2 sections namely the outer and inner citadel. Inside the citadel there is a secret tunnel passage which descends until the Alara river. The walls of citadel are made of smooth and large cut stones. Outer citadel entry is gained by an arched gate.
The walls of inner citadel are strengthened by the towers having circular, quadrangular and triangular plans. In the area surrounded by the walls of the inner citadel a small palce building and a baths with two domes catch the eye. These are interconnected by a passageway having and extended archway and they were built in the Seljuk period. In the courtyard of the baths there is a cistern which meets the water requirement. The baths comprised of 2 sections : Hot and Tepid sections. While their walls were coated with tiles, the ceilings of both sections were decorated with frescoes.
The architectural style of palace baths is a rarely encountered sample of the Seljuk architecture.
The fact that the plenty of animal and human motifs were also used in decorating the building along with the stylized plant motifs on the tiles and frescoes makes the monument an interesting sample among the monuments of Turk Islam decorative art.
Alara inn was constructed in 1231 by Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat. Alara inn is built on an area with dimensions of 38X50 m. The structure has a the form of a citadel inn due to the safety reasons like many Seljuk caravanserais. On both sides of the gate of the structure there are watching towers which are ascended by stairs. Gate of inn bears no decoration. A wide hall is entered from this gate.
At the opposite side in this hall the door is located provides entry to the covered courtyard, along which the rooms are aligned to accommodate the travelers. On the right and left of the entry hall the corridors provide entry to the sections prepared for the animals and also servants. As will be understood, in the middle the in is formed by a courtyard which is covered with an high extended archway, and 2 covered sections surrounding this courtyard. One of these sections within the other. The Evans and rooms located in the innermost section facing the central courtyard are for the travelers accommodation. The outer or the second sections are reserved for the servants or animals. It was built with completely regular cut stones, the monument exhibits differences from the other Seljuk inns with its plan characteristics.
Alara inn has been restored to present its visitors unforgettable beauties with its terrace, view and also the exotic bazaar, restaurant and cafe where the personnel serve in customes of the Seljuk period.
